Biography

Medhin Tsehaiu is the UNAIDS Country Director in the Republic of Kenya since July 2019. She coordinates the work of 11 UN Agencies and provides strategic support to the National AIDS response leveraging partnerships aligning with national development priorities and the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. She advocates for gender equality and empowerment, multisectoral partnership and coordination to end AIDS in Kenya.

She represents the Multilateral Development Partners in the Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanism and provided strategic leadership and support to the development of various rounds of grant applications that successfully mobilized funds to implement high-impact interventions towards achieving Kenya’s National targets.

Additionally, she has been a key partner in the PEPFAR Country Operational Planning processes that bring close to $350 million every year to support the AIDS response while strengthening the health system to sustain the AIDS response.

Dr Tsehaiu has served as UNAIDS Country in Zambia and South Sudan from 2011 to 2019. Before joining UNAIDS, she worked with the Federal Ministry of Health of Ethiopia as Chief of Staff from 2006 to 2011. During her service at the Ministry, she guided the development of the health sector reform, the community-based Health Extension Program among others.
