Dr. Paulzen studied medicine and business administration at RWTH Aachen University. From 2004, he worked at the Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics at RWTH Aachen University Hospital. He qualified as a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy in 2009. In 2017, he completed his habilitation and was awarded the venia legendi. In the same year, he became Medical Director and Chief Physician at Alexianer Centre for Mental Health Aachen/Gangelt.
Dr. Paulzen has written numerous scientific publications and book chapters focusing on drug safety, pharmacokinetic drug interactions and therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). He is (co-)editor of PSIAC, an internet-based drug interaction program. In 2019, Dr. Paulzen was appointed to the expert commission for medical malpractice by the board of the North Rhine Medical Association. He is deputy spokesperson for the Psychopharmacology Section of the DGPPN (German Society for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics) and a member of the Therapeutic Drug Monitoring working group of the AGNP (Working Group for Neuropsychopharmacology and Pharmacopsychiatry). Since 2021, he has also been a board member of the Landesverband leitender Ärztinnen und Ärzte für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie in NRW e. V. (LLPP).
