Biography

Dr Mwaka A. Monze (BScHb, MBChB, MSc, PhD) is a Virologist heading the University Teaching Hospital Virology Laboratory which performs various public health laboratory functions for the Ministry of Health and the Zambia National Public Health Institute. She is also an honorary lecturer in the University of Zambia, School of Medicine. She currently serves as the 1) Director of the Zambia National Influenza Center (NIC), a member of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) 2) Director of the Zambia National Polio Laboratory, a member of the Global Polio Laboratory Network (GPLN) 3) Director of the Zambia National Measles Laboratory, a member of the Global Measles and Rubella Laboratory Network (GRMLN) 4) National Representative, International Committee for the Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV)

Her research interests are mainly 1) respiratory virus epidemiology including influenza, SARS CoV 2 and RSV; 2) population immunity to vaccine preventable diseases notably measles and rubella 3) HIV diagnostics and epidemiology and 4) arbovirus infections. She has several publications on these subjects.
