Pierre-Marie Girard, MD, PhD

Biography

Professor Pierre-Marie Girard, MD, PhD, is Infectious Diseases specialist in Hospital St Antoine (Public Assistance-Hospitals of Paris), and Sorbonne University in Paris. During the last three years, he was executive vice-president for International Affairs of the Institute Pasteur, Paris.

Pr PM Girard was previously Head of the Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases at Saint-Antoine Hospital. He was also the Global North coordinator for the Senegal site of the ANRS (French National Agency for Research on AIDS and Viral Hepatitis), and for capacity-building programs against infectious diseases in Senegal and Benin and several other settings in West and Central Africa.

His main scientific interests focused on clinical research in treatment and prophylaxis of AIDS-related opportunistic infections in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), as well as in high-income countries. Since the early nineties, he has been involved in numerous national and international multi-center clinical trials of antiretroviral therapy (ART), particularly in drug evaluation and antiretroviral strategies. He has also investigated the long-term tolerability of ART and access to antiretroviral drugs in LMIC. He holds a special interest in hepatitis B–HIV co-infection, and in the evaluation of simplified ART regimens and induction maintenance regimens. He was the principal investigator of numerous ART trials in France and West Africa.
