Robert H. Remien, PhD

Biography

Dr. Remien is a Clinical Psychologist, a Professor of Clinical Medical Psychology, Director of the NIMH-funded HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies, and Area Leader of the Division of Gender, Sexuality, and Health at the NY State Psychiatric Institute and the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University.  He is the Clinical Director for Behavioral Health in the Northeast/Caribbean AIDS Education and Training Center, Faculty Mentor for HIV Center Postdoctoral Fellows, and serves on numerous NIH review panels and local, national, and international advisory groups, including the NY State Governor’s Ending the HIV Epidemic AIDS Advisory Council. 

Dr. Remien has been involved in HIV volunteer work, clinical work, and community mobilization and advocacy since the early 1980’s and he has developed a large and diverse portfolio of domestic and international research projects focused on the intersection of mental health and HIV prevention and care – specifically HIV testing, linkage and retention in care, adherence to treatment, and HIV prevention among PLWH, with an emphasis on individual-level and social determinants of health.  His research includes the development and testing of evidence-based behavioral interventions.
