Biography

Rui Sarmento e Castro concluded his Master’s Degree in Public Health in the University of Oporto, in 1999 and his PhD in the field of Infectious Diseases in the University of Oporto, in 2005.

Currently he is the Director of Infectious Diseases Service and Director of the Department of the Medicine of Centro Hospitalar do Porto. He is Professor of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in the University of Minho, Portugal and He was Clinical Director of Hospital Joaquim Urbano, in Oporto (2000-2011). Until recently was member of the National Scientific Board of the Portuguese Program for HIV/AIDS and of the board of the Program for Hepatitis. Dr. Sarmento has been president of the Portuguese Association for the Clinical Study on HIV/AIDS, Portuguese Study Group on HIV/Hepatitis and Portuguese Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology. Dr. Sarmento has been the local principal investigator in dozens of international clinical trials.
