Sofia Viegas is a biologist graduated from the Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo, Mozambique, with a doctorate degree in medical sciences, focuses on molecular epidemiology of tuberculosis in Mozambique, from Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. At present, she holds the position of Deputy General Director at the National Institute of Health (INS) of Mozambique. She has also played a leadership role as Director of Public Health Laboratories from 2019 to 2023 and Head of the Department of Laboratory Reference Services from 2015 to 2019 at INS. During Covid-19 pandemic, she was the lead of the laboratory component of the national response in Mozambique. Throughout her career she led efforts in the field of tuberculosis, public health, and lab diagnostics with the aim of strengthening the health system in Mozambique.
