Tom Fletcher, PhD, FRCP

Biography

Tom Fletcher is an academic infectious diseases physician at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine with a proven track record in translational and collaborative research in emerging and high consequence infectious diseases. He is the Director of LSTMs Global Health Trials Unit that has a large portfolio of phase 1-4 clinical trials focused in Lower- and middle-income countries. He leads the ACTIVE Trial platform: A strategic trans-disciplinary partnership between LSTM and partners to deliver the Accelerating Treatment and DIagnostics for Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers. This includes the UMIT-1 and UMIT-2 Trials in Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Turkiye and Iraq- the first early phase trials (1-2b) of novel therapeutics in VHF/CCHF and evaluating new diagnostic platforms for CCHF. Following secondment to HQ WHO in 2013 he led a WHO clinical team that drove innovation and a paradigm shift in Ebola virus disease supportive care in the West Africa, and continues to deploy for WHO to Filovirus disease outbreaks, most recently to Uganda in 2022. He is currently Candidate Chief Investigator on two early phase clinical trials within the AGILE platform and currently supervises 10 PhD/MD students.
