Victor Appay is research director / professor, currently heading a research group within the ImmunoConcept Unit of the University of Bordeaux, France.
Over the last 20 years, Victor Appay has worked at the bridge between fundamental and clinical HIV research in different scientific environments (UK, Switzerland, France and Japan), and developed a strong expertise in human immunology, HIV pathogenesis and the study of HIV infected patients.
Specifically, his research has focused on identifying clear correlates of CD8+ T-cell efficacy against HIV, trying now to promote these through the induction of potent T-cell responses for preventative or therapeutic clinical applications. He has worked on the parallel between HIV infection and immunosenescence, demonstrating the role of immune activation in the development of premature immune ageing in HIV infected patients, and its relevance for HIV disease progression and immune reconstitution upon antiretroviral therapy initiation.
