Prof. Calcagno is an associate professor at the University of Turin (Department of Medical Sciences, Unit of Infectious Diseases) and a consultant in Infectious Diseases at the ASL “Città di Torino”, Amedeo di Savoia Hospital, Turino, Italy. He obtained a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand in 2016.
He is a member of the Panel of the Italian Guidelines on the Use of Antiretrovirals and Management of Patients living with HIV, the Scientific Committee of the Italian Cohort of HIV-positive Patients (ICONA), the Scientific Board of the Italian Cohort of HIV-positive Geriatric Patients (GEPPO) and the Italian Registry of Non-tubercular Mycobacteria (IRENE). Prof. Calcagno is the coordinator of the Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Medicine (MYGRO) study group on Mycobacteria. He is an associate Editor of “BMC Infectious Diseases”, “Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine” and “PlosOne” Journals.
He has experience as a consulting physician in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine in
resource-limited countries (Burundi and Uganda) and is conducting Phase II, III, and IV studies in antiviral, antibiotic, and antitubercular treatment trials. Since 2014, Prof. Calcagno has helped to build a collaboration with the Infectious Disease Institute, Makerere University (Uganda) to improve key features of HIV Research (pharmacogenetics and co-morbidities), which has been funded through the Erasmus+ programme since 2019.
His main fields of interest are the clinical pharmacology and pharmacogenetics of anti-infective drugs and CNS complications of infections, including HIV.
