Carlos Brites, MD, PhD

Biography

Dr Brites graduated  in Medicine at Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) in 1982 and received his certification in Infectious Diseases at Instituto de Infectologia Emilio Ribas, São Paulo, Brazil, in 1985. He got a PhD degree at UFBA in 1997 and in 1998 spent a time in Harvard School of Public Health as a Visiting Scientist.

Currently, he is Professor of Infectious Diseases, School of Medicine, at UFBA. He coordinates the Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory at UFBA´s Hospital. His main areas of interest are viral infections (HIV, HCV, HTLV-1, EBV, Zika), the effects of viral coinfections on natural course of diseases, and antiretroviral therapy. He has been involved in several clinical trials, especially in HIV field, and have co-authored over 190 scientific papers.

He was the Editor-in-Chief of The Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases from 2009 to 2016. He is an editorial board member of Current HIV Research journal.  He has served as reviewer of over 35 scientific journals.
