Dr. David Boulware is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota, USA who is an infectious disease physician-scientist with formal training in clinical trials, public health, and tropical medicine. While he may best be known for the pioneering of remote, internet-based COVID-19 clinical trials on hydroxychloroquine testing post-exposure prophylaxis, early treatment, and pre-exposure prophylaxis in March-April 2020 (and then further clinical trials on other possible repurposed therapies, including metformin), the actual focus of his research is meningitis in resource-limited areas. His research team addresses diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and quality improvement initiatives of meningitis in advanced HIV disease. His team has particular interest in cryptococcal meningitis as Cryptococcus is the most common cause of adult meningitis in Sub-Saharan Africa causing ~15% of AIDS-related mortality globally. He has active research collaborations in Uganda, South Africa, Ethiopia, Brazil, Indonesia, UK, and The Netherlands.
