Edmund Capparelli is a Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) for the School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Capparelli received his Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of California San Francisco in 1985 followed by fellowship training at Hartford Hospital and the University of California Irvine. In 1992 he helped establish the Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group Pharmacology Lab at UCSD and currently serves as principal investigator for a NIAID supported Pharmacology Laboratory within the Infant Maternal Pediatric and Adolescent AIDS Trials (IMPAACT) Network. He has served on several PACTG and IMPAACT Committees and has been the pharmacologist or vice-chair on over 20 pediatric studies within these Networks. In related HIV research activities, he serves as the pharmacologist for the UCSD HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center (HNRC). His research expertise is in pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) modeling and application of population models and simulation methods to the design and analysis of clinical pharmacologic studies.
Dr. Capparelli is currently the principal investigator for the NICHD supported Pediatric Pharmacology Research Unit (PPRU) at UCSD. He serves in a leadership role within this Network including membership in the Executive Committee and Chair of the Pharmacometrics Core where he has directed pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic design and analysis for the several multicenter PPRU Network studies. Dr. Capparelli has been working in the area of pediatric population PK/PD using the program NONMEM for 20 years. Dr. Capparelli is currently a member of the FDA Clinical Pharmacology Advisory Committee. He also serves on WHO Antiretroviral Working Group and AIDSinfo Pediatric HIV treatment Guideline Committees. Dr Capparelli has over 60 publications relating to HIV and its complications.
