Dr. Jason Brenchley is a senior investigator and chief of the barrier immunity section in the laboratory of viral diseases within the intramural program of the national institute of allergy and infectious diseases at the NIH in Bethesda, MD. He has been involved in HIV research for 20 years. He received two BS degrees and one MS degree from the Idaho State University in 1999 and a PhD in immunology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2003. He performed his post-doctoral work between 2003-2007 at the Vaccine Research Center, NIH. His work has focused on understanding the causes and consequences of unique pathologies that occur within the gastrointestinal tracts that occur within HIV-infected individuals. His work demonstrated that pathologies which occur within the GI tract result translocation of microbial products from the lumen of the GI tract into circulation. His current efforts aim to understand how the composition of the GI tract microbiome and host responses to the microbiome contribute to microbial translocation, inflammation, and disease using a nonhuman primate model of HIV infection. Dr. Brenchley is an American Academy for Microbiology Fellow and was recognized as one of the world’s most influential scientific minds by Thomson Reuters. Dr. Brenchley has published over 150 peer reviewed manuscripts focused on inflammation, mucosal immunity, and microbiome in HIV pathogenesis and has an H-index of 63.
