Biography

Dr Jessica Howell MBBS(Hons) FRACP PhD MSc (Epi) PGDip PH is a gastroenterologist and senior research fellow at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne/ University of Melbourne and the Burnet Institute, Melbourne. She leads the hepatitis B research working group within the Disease Elimination program at Burnet Institute. She combines clinical, basic science, epidemiological and public health expertise in translational research projects in liver cancer and viral hepatitis, focused on marginalized populations including people who inject drugs and people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities. She currently leads several national and international multi-centre studies in rapid point-of-care diagnostics in viral hepatitis, biomarker development in liver cancer, health systems research and international health programs. Dr Howell is a regularly invited plenary speaker and chair at national and international meetings, has over 60 peer-reviewed publications and over 80 abstracts presented at national and international meetings, and is CI on over AU$13 million competitive grant funding. She is a regular invited panel for multiple national and international clinical guidelines and technical advisor to the WHO (WPRO).
