John Rwegasha, MBChB, MMed, FRCP(Lond), MSc

Biography

Dr. John Rwegasha is a Consultant Physician Gastroenterologist; He is currently the Director of Medical Services at Muhimbili National Hospital and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Muhimbili University of Health Sciences – Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

He holds a basic and advanced medical degrees from Makerere University Uganda (MB.ChB-1998) and Masters of Medicine from Aga Khan University, Kenya respectively. He is a Fellow of London’s Royal College of Physicians and a Fellow in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Interventional Endoscopy from African Institute of Digestive Diseases, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Leadership and Management from Mzumbe University, Tanzania; and Advanced Fellowship Award in Global Health from University of Washington, USA.

Dr. Rwegasha, has contributed significantly in the field, through establishment of the first functional Gastroenterology and Hepatology Unit in his Country’s National Referral Hospital in 2011 and subsequently in 2014 jointly established a state of the art National Gastroenterology Training Centre which is currently offering advanced endoscopic interventional training in ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangial Pancreatography) and EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound).

Dr. Rwegasha, He is also a WHO Consultant in Viral Hepatitis and has facilitated establishment of National strategic plans and treatment guidelines for Viral Hepatitis in South Sudan and Tanzania home country. He has also been involved in conducting National Hepatitis baseline assessment review and implementation programs in Mozambique and South Africa. He’s also a senior member for the International Scientific Committee for Conference of Liver Diseases in Africa (COLDA).

Dr. Rwegasha, has co-authored several publications on Viral Hepatitis through reputable International Journals and he is currently a Lead PI for care and treatment of Viral Hepatitis B Mono Infection- WHO Guideline Demonstration project in Tanzania.
