Joop Arends studied Medicine at the University of Maastricht, receiving his medical degree in 2000. After specialist training as an internist/ infectious diseases physician at the University Medical Center Utrecht, he received his PhD in hepatitis C in 2010 on a thesis entitled “Immunological and virological changes during treatment for hepatitis C infections”.
During his academic carrier he published over 140 peer-reviewed articles, supervised 8 PhDs successful and served as principal investigator of (inter)national studies. In 2016 he became associate professor and was awarded ESCMID fellow by the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.
Next to this, Joop’s passion for digitalisation and innovation led him to found the “health appie” Happi in 2016. Its aim is to provide a new way of healthcare that makes patients Happi’er and Healthy’er.
In the summer of 2020, Joop decided to become a fulltime entrepreneur and is now the director of PatientApp, the company further developing the Happi platform.
