Liying Wang, PhD

Biography

Dr. Liying Wang is an Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing at Florida State University and a faculty member of the Institute of Digital Health Innovation (IDHI) and the Center of Population Sciences and Health Equity (C-PSHE).

Dr. Wang's research program combines clinical science, community-engaged approaches, and digital health technologies to address mental health disparities among marginalized populations, particularly people living with HIV and sexual and gender minorities. Her innovative work integrates artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches while carefully considering algorithmic bias and ethical implications in healthcare delivery.

Dr. Wang's research spans the U.S., China, and Southeast Asia, employing both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to examine social determinants of health and develop culturally tailored mHealth interventions. Her work particularly focuses on addressing systemic inequities in mental healthcare access and delivery through technology-enabled solutions. She emphasizes the importance of developing AI-driven mental health interventions that are culturally responsive and explicitly address historical biases in healthcare algorithms and delivery systems.

Dr. Wang has been PI or MPI on several intramurally funded projects, including a University of Washington Population Health Initiative Tier 1 and Tier 2 Pilot Grant to develop an mHealth intervention for HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. Her current research explores the intersection of AI-enabled mental health support systems and health equity, examining how digital interventions can be designed to better serve traditionally underrepresented communities.
