Biography

Professor Dr. Mamun Al Mahtab Shwapnil is the Head of Interventional Hepatology Division, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). He is also Visiting Professor at the Department of Gastroenterology & Metabology, Ehime University, Japan,  and member of Strategic & Technical Advisory Group on Viral Hepatitis of WHO-SEAR. Professor Mahtab is Principal Investigator of the Phase-I, II and III clinical trials of NASVAC, a new therapeutic vaccine for chronic hepatitis B, which is the ‘first novel molecule’ to be approved by the Directorate General of Drug Administration of the Bangladesh Government.

He is also Principal Investigator of the clinical trial of Bangavax, the SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine candidate, developed in Bangladesh. He has more than 320 publications in peer reviewed scientific journals and more than 350 scientific conference talks to his credit. Professor Mahtab has compiled five text and reference books in Hepatology. Professor Mahtab was awarded ‘Premio Nacional’ from Cuban Academy of Sciences in 2019 for the discovery of NASVAC and BAS Gold Medal Award 2021 in Biological Sciences by Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. He is the Vice President of Euroasian Gastroenterological Association and General Secretary of South Asian Association for the Study of the Liver.
