Zobair M. Younossi, MD, MPH, FACG, FACP, AGAF, FAASLD

Zobair M Younossi MD MPH is the Chairman of the Global NASH Council and Professor and Chairman of Beatty Liver and Obesity Research, Inova Health System, Virginia. Dr. Younossi earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine (AOA 1989) with training in medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, while earning his master of public health with multiple honors from San Diego State University (1995). He then served as Hepatologist and Senior Researcher at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation before establishing the Center for Liver Diseases and Beatty Liver and Obesity Research Program at Inova Health System, both renowned in pioneering research NAFLD and outcomes research. He currently also serves as the President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Chronic Liver Disease Foundation (2018-Present).
Dr. Younossi has served as the Chairman of Department of Medicine, Inova Fairfax Medical Campus (2011-2024), President of Inova Medicine (2019-2024), Vice President and Chairman of Research for Inova Health System (2005-2022) and Vice Chairman of the Board of Inova Health System Foundation (2011-2024). Dr.Younossi specializes in hepatology and gastroenterology and has pioneered research in NAFLD/MASLD and has been a leader in the field of patient-reported outcomes (PROs), economic assessment, and outcomes research in liver disease. He leads several international efforts related to NAFLD/MASLD and PROs in liver disease through global collaborations, including the Chair of Global NASH Council, Global Liver Council and the Global Liver and NASH Registries.
Dr. Younossi has authored over 770 articles, 3 books, 6 journal supplements, over 25 book chapters, over 1090 abstracts presented at the international scientific meetings and has been highly sought-after speaker providing over 510 faculty lectures in national and international meetings. Dr. Younossi has an H-index of 112 and is listed as the most cited scholars in the area of Liver Disease and NAFLD according to Scholar GPS-2022.
Finally,  Dr.Younossi has also served as the co-editor of Liver International, Associate Editor of J of Hepatology, and on the editorial board of a number of important medical journals. He has represented the American Association of Liver Disease and American Gastroenterological Association at different congressional meetings.
