Overview
About this Symposium

The Devil Wears GP120 | Satellite Symposium at AIDS 2024 was successfully held as a hybrid symposium on Thursday, 25 July 2024 as part of the AIDS 2024, the 25th International AIDS Conference, in Munich, Germany.

As HIV medicine progresses, treatment objectives for individuals with HIV evolve. While viral suppression was once the primary goal, the field now embraces a holistic approach to address immune system responses and inflammation. HIV infection profoundly affects the immune system, posing clinical challenges for those living with it. Although many experience CD4 cell count improvements and better CD4/CD8 ratios with viral suppression, some highly treated patients may have subdued responses, in addition to persistent chronic inflammation.

Our symposium focuses on understanding HIV's adverse effects on the immune system and inflammation. We'll highlight novel interventions aimed at improving clinical outcomes. Speakers will delve into immune system response variations among different HIV subpopulations, the clinical impact of chronic inflammation due to HIV, and detailed examinations of GP-120 and other inflammatory markers to better HIV clinical care.

- Immunologists.
Learning Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, participants will be able to:

- Describe HIV-induced immune dysfunction and how the immune system response differs between treatment-naïve and treatment-experienced patients;

- Highlight the many causes and pathways of inflammation in a chronic HIV infection;

- Reflect on the various potential interventions being studied;

- Describe the role of GP120 in triggering inflammation and immunity in HIV infection; and

- Reflect on the potential clinical implications of monitoring and intervening in the immune responses caused by viral glycoproteins.
