Very sorry to hear of the news of Charles' death
The way in which the Pediatric Workshop has become such a fixture, and the rapid development of the COVID webinars during the pandemic are testament to the effectiveness of the education that Charles has established, and leaves as a legacy.

Charles was a great visionary of HIV research and care training and dissemination. In addition, his contributions to HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases were paramount during decades of dedication. May he rest in peace, and may his family, friends and co-workers find comfort soon.

Dear Charles and family,
We met for the first time in Lago Maggiore in 1998, Charles introduced me for my very first talk at the HIV Resistance workshop, boy those were heady times. Great science, great debates, brilliance and arrogance and humor on full display and Charles always right in the center of the action. Charles was fearless and funny and a good friend to many - lucky for me to be included on that long list.
Laughing at the news that Charles burned up the motor of a fancy car (was it a V12 Jag?) driving across Europe - at full speed! That was Charles - his love of science, his passion for mentoring and teaching, his keen intellect his love of life was always "pedal-to-the-metal" - always full-throttle. God we lost someone very very special and many of us feel a big hole knowing Charles is gone but not forgotten and still very much loved by the many who had the privilege to call him a friend.

dr Charles was a great soul of matchless courage, one of the great scientists on earth. your demise reminds us that nothing is promised only that life worths it.
Your death a lesson to all of us in VE. Your name is carved on hearts, a legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories we share about you.
To all of us in VE, those who died while trying to make our world a better place didn't actually die. They proved some points. Our job is to notice them and continued from where they stopped. Charles was a sun in the center of every constellation and people want to be near him.
Only remembered by what you have done.

The International Pediatric HIV Workshop began with a call from Charles asking if I was interested in working with him on a workshop focused on pediatric HIV; initially reluctant, after surveying my pediatric HIV colleagues, we moved forward and due to Charles diligence and recognition of the need for pediatric focused research now have over a decade of a major meeting focusing on pediatric and maternal HIV research. Charles may not have been a pediatrician, but we all felt he was an honorary pediatrician! I will miss him and his enthusisam and "we can do it" attitude, there are not many people out there like Charles. My condolences to his family - and also to say to them what a valued colleague he was and how much I appreciate their sharing him with us.

My condolences to Charles friends and family.
The world has lost an amazing scientist and most of all such a kind person. Not many that reached his level remain so approachable and make you feel at ease in any discussion. While of course still remain sharp on details while keeping track of the bigger picture.

Dr Charles Boucher touched my career from a distance yet profoundly. My first attendance to ICREID in 2018 was made possible by Virology Education. Also the numerous COVID-19 on-line education programs and conferences kept me abreast of the pandemic. This encapsulates your passion to bridge knowledge gap. I am confident that your team in Virology Education will keep your legacy as an educator. May his family find solace in his invaluable contributions to science and education in this time of grief.

Such sad news. The page upon page of fond remembrances here are a testament to Dr Boucher’s esteemed position in the international HIV community. More telling is the love and respect he always received from his team, with whom I was fortunate to work on occasion. I send my condolences to them, and to his family.

Having been a contemporary of Charles working in parallel, from the earliest meetings we attended together I appreciated his probing questions and thoughtful answers. Respect for his intellect and his clear drive for meaningful knowledge that would enhance health was the reason so many of us were drawn to his meetings as participants and speakers. His probing gaze is so memorable. He will be missed, but his impact will live on.

I met Charles decades ago and remember being told that I needed to meet the person who had an unparalleled depth of knowledge in HIV resistance. Our paths crossed again through VE and with his academic interests as we sought ways to engage a new generation of MBA and medical students in the area of Global Health. Those who never met Charles are most unfortunate. Those who did will forever benefit from his contributions to science, his energy and his friendship.

Remembering Charles as a close colleague and friend and a unique postage stamp in the collection of virologists. One of the highlights is when we joined in making young students aware and enthusiastic about their role and involve them in finding solutions in the hiv next gen and viruskenner programs. Condoleances for his family and friends.

Beyond any professional achievement He is (not was) a friend, with a southern smile (ask to Italians what does it mean), and I'll always remember His warm welcome and remarkable humor when I started to attend the Virology Education meetings. I dare to think that He is now in the process of organizing some extraterrestrial meeting of clinical pharmacology... He remains with us

Dr. Saravanan Muthupandian

It is unfortunate to hear his death. I came to know Charles some 15 years before in his publication. Fortunate enough, I meet him in 2017 I guess here in Addis and able to attend his lecture. Further, during tea break he gave me few minutes to chat on mutual work and future emerging diseases. Do you know, he mentioned that our future emerging diseases to be viral origin and indeed mentioned that it will be respiratory viruses. He was also the one who speaks about HIV research in Africa and was a voice for African scientists at some time.
We all miss him.
Rest in peace!

I want to confer my condoleances to those that Charles left behind and that he loved. I have worked with Charles on several grant applications at Viroscience at Erasmus MC, among which the NIH project on dolutegravir resistance. He took me to Moscow on one of his trips to establish new international collaborations, which enabled me to get to know the person behind the leading scientist that he had become. He had this ability to surprise you with a reply or a question, which I explain from his youthful spirit; his endless curiosity, spontaneity and amazement about the world and the people he met. I am sad that he left so early but grateful for the time we worked together.

It is so sad to lose such a resourceful guy.
I fast met him at the IAS 2016 conference in Durban South Africa and as a young researcher I was motivated but his enthusiastic about HIV research and the need to teach and nurture young researchers.
My second encounter was in Malawi with The Interest conference where he was our group team leader during poster presentations his mentorship and motivation remains in my memory. We will miss your teaching and motivation during varies HIV/AIDS presentations.
My condolences to the family.

WSPID recognizes and mourn the untimely loss of Dr Charles Boucher, scientific director of Virology Education. Charles began his career as an HIV researcher who contributed enormously to the field of antiretroviral resistance at the start of antiretroviral therapy. He co-founded Virology Education in 1998, realizing the importance of educating clinicians and researchers in the field. I was privileged to get to know Charles when he and his team collaborated with clinicians and researchers in establishing the International Workshop in HIV Pediatrics, held annually since 2009. We benefitted from his insights and collegiality to establish a forum for HIV clinicians that is engaging, informative and an ideal forum for networking for those in the field. His leadership in combining scientific inquiry with commitment to education, underpinned by collegiality is an enduring model that will benefit all of us.

My prayers goes to the immediate family of Charles Boucher and the entire Virology Education family.
The outpouring of love and lovely messages from colleagues and friends from all over the world speaks volumes on his life and impact he made while still alive.
Sadly, his death reminds us how transient life is and the need to make impact where ever we are living.
As the song writer said "Only be remembered by what you have done". Live your life to the fullest, but remember, posterity would only remember you by what you have done, while still alive.
Adieu to the great Scientist, Charles Boucher
