Truly saddened to read this news. Charles was one of my first advisors on HIV drug resistance back in my early days at Roche, working on HIV protease inhibitors. I learned so much from this humble physician scientist to whom I am forever indebted. To his family and other colleagues, may his memory be a blessing. I will certainly miss his intellect and drive and selflessness.

Charles has been a beacon of scientific freshness , honesty and innovation, his curious mind was only matched by his ferocious sense of humor, I first met Charles 39 years ago when we were doing phase 1 studies of the ancestor of Ritonavir. He will be very missed

It has been shocking news; taken away way before his time. The world of HIV loses yet another great scientist and friend. Charles your legacy lives on in many of the wonderful scientists and clinicians that you have trained and inspired along the way. It is profoundly sad that the world has prematurely lost a great scientist and creative thinker. Charles had remarkable insight into the molecular mechanisms of viral disease. His creativity and ability led to great advances in life saving antiviral therapies, It was a pleasure to know him and work with him on international committees.

I lost a friend and colleague to pancreatic cancer, a terrible disease, which I believe is probably caused by a virus. Charles was kind, caring, a family man even though he travelled a lot all over the world educating and spreading the gospel of virology. He was my Flying Dutchman and right wing. I met Charles through HIV drug resistance from back in the beginning of my entry into HIV & my work, with HCV too. From the early days in the mid 90s I started attending drug resistance discussions & became a regular st the annual Drug Resistance Workshops & a member of drug resistance panels, I was the community representative at these meetings & on these panels. I never ever missed a Resistance Workshop, went to every one in Sitges or wherever they were held. I started collaborating with Charles early on by holding Feedback Workshops from the Resistance Workshops every year at NYU and Charles & many of the researchers from the Workshop would come & report at my Feedback workshops. This became an annual event. About 12 years ago Charles seeing all my work & recognition on the aging & HIV problem asked me if I wanted to start an Aging & HIV Workshop with him, which we did. Chalres has always been a supporter of me & my thoughts & ideas and on the Organizing Committee for the Aging Workshop.P ersonally from time to time in recent years we would speak on the telephone and he was supportive as I was going through some health concerns & issues related to the Aging Workshop. I started to miss him immediately after hearing the very sad news. He was a presence.

His contributions, in a short time, to the continuing medical education of Hepatologists and Gastroenterologists in África was profound.
The COLDA meeting became an eagerly awaited annual meeting on the continent well attended and highly rated by the scientific and clinical community. It provided a solid platform for the African Hepatology and GI community to meet, learn and exchange ideas.

I was greatly shocked and moved by the news of Charles's passing away.
I remember Charles as a very enthusiastic, at times chaotic, bright, funny and likeable person. Together we set up company sponsored workshops on HIV resistance and scientific initiatives. Working with Charles was challenging, but productive and fun.
