Alice, your words resonate so much. Charles was a lovely man, humble humorous and quite brilliant. He always had time for people. I met him when I was a PhD student all those years ago and enjoyed many inspirational and fun conferences with him. My thoughts are with his family and all of you at Virology Education I know how much you will all miss him...

His legacy will live on in all of those meetings he started and young scientists and doctors he inspired

Since I met Charles in the early nineties in the AMC, I was impressed by his energy, enthusiasm and original ideas.
Charles stimulated me to do pediatric hiv research. We met at conferences and pediatric hiv meetings and talked about research but also about our families, which was very important for him. I deeply regret his passing away and will miss him. I will miss the inspiring meetings we had with the Penta group at San Servolo in Venice. I wish his wife, children, family, friends and colleagues all the strength and support for the coming years.

I vividly remember Charles first visit to GlaxoWellcome (now GSK) in 1999 for a short visit to Marty St. Clair's Lab to see first hand our newly implemented HIV-1 Sequencing Assay. Charles was everything mentioned but especially thoughtful with lively discussions around resistance and diagnostics...challenging us to make better ARV's. He will be greatly missed by all.

We met Charles as a medical student, always bubbling with ideas within as well as outside the world of medicine. As a student he worked hard and he played hard. As soon as he was involved in HIV research he worked really hard but with his creativity there was always room for more music, books, fun stories and anecdotes. He shared his ideas with everyone. That spirit was true in his education programs for doctors as well as his inspirational programs aimed at the brightest medical students.
We will miss him..
We wish his wife, children, colleagues and friends all the strength in these difficult times

I'll forever remember Charles for his infinite source of inspiration, creativity and especially: his genuine care for others. As young students he gave us wise advices like "If you develop yourself in something, you'll automatically begin to like it." But also during appreciated personal conversations he posed some impactful questions I'll never forget, such as: "What if, in stead of spreading yourself on so many tasks, you would really focus on one thing? And do it exceptionally well!". And not to forget his virus-anology for medicine/life he shared with us in June 2020: "To pass on our knowldege and experiences to the next generations. Not only by leading as inspiring examples, but also by approaching other people personally and by being a mentor." In my eyes Charles succeeded at this like no other! If I can only pass on a glimpse of what he has meant to so many people around the world, that would also mean the world for me. Dear Charles, I hope you rest in peace and I wish all your family and dearest friends strength and love during this tough period... I'm sure you left them some beautiful memories to look back on in the future.

Prof. Michael S. Odimayo

It is impossible to sum up in a few words the contribution that Charles made to the HIV field. His understanding and insight into viral resistance was immense but beyond that I learned so much pharmacology from him simply because he probed and questioned and challenged us to think outside the box. The vision to start Virology Education and then to grow this truly unique organisation is something the whole community has benefited from. I will miss him greatly and so will countless others as reflected by the condolence messages. To be in a meeting with Charles or a restaurant/bar meant you could be sure of wonderfully stimulating company. My personal thanks to Charles for arranging my 70th birthday bash in a wonderful restaurant in Salvador!
My heart goes out to Ireen and the family at their loss of a husband and dad. Also to Alice and the whole VE family.
Charles and I shared a love of football and so in the words of the Liverpool song - Charles 'You'll never walk alone'. We will always remember you.
