Charles transformed Virology Education into a leading provider of important educational conferences in the medical field. He hired great staff and showed leadership. The world is poorer for his passing and he will be missed. I wish the hardworking staff at Virology Education success in continuing with his legacy.

With wit and love and heaps of sarcasm, Charles pushed us to not only do better but to be better versions of ourselves. When I was an undergraduate student, Charles invited me to spend the summer in his lab and taught me how to sequence coronavirus genomes. He gave me opportunities and learning experiences when others were saying no. In my thirties, he pushed me to write a book about Joep when I was the one saying no. I will always remember his out there personality, his boldness, his ability to think big and his capacity for kindness. He was no ordinary person. My love and condolences to his family and especially his children.

We are left with many fond memories and our medical and scientific field is left without a major figure with the sad passing of Charles.
